2004 - New Dances
PASTORALE PAUSE (World Premiere)
Set to a suite of Celtic music and songs by musician/composer John Whelan,
this work for 5 dancers explores simple "pastoral pleasures".
Through images inspired by the mountains and meadows of the American West,
Dorfman creates a journey that embraces the serenity, jubilance, sensuousness
and intoxication of being at one with nature and the relationships and
play it evokes. With two revolving disks, dancers create images that seem
to float, evolve, dissolve. From vibrant jigs to resonant ballads, the
music, and thus the dance, takes us on a joyous, thoughtful and whirling
ride.
DIVIDE AND CONQUER (World Premiere)
In her newest quartet, Dorfman explores marital bliss, harmony and perfection.
Sunday times, brunch at 11 and lovemaking on the table. This synchrony
of two in motion is suddenly replaced by the frenetic demands of life
as this couple faces the transition to a family of three to four and,
more poignantly, back again. Through personal experience and crystalline
observation Dorfman creates a work that captures the humor, seriousness,
and age old complexities of family life cycles. With a commissioned score
by award winning composer, Joel Diamond, DIVIDE AND CONQUER will leave
you both smiling with recognition and contemplating your past, present
and future.
Tales from DANCE/STORIES
Tales from DANCE/STORIES, is an excerpt from Ms. Dorfman’s full
evening interdisciplinary collaboration which features a selection of
folk tales and authentic stories from around the world. Charlotte Blake
Alston brings her dynamic and enchanting storytelling-style, Horacee Arnold
and John Blake create the driving rhythms and musical landscape that encompass
the work. Through image and metaphor, the dancers magically weave the
threads that create a multi-cultural tapestry that celebrates the commonality
of the human experience.
PORTRAIT
PORTRAIT is Carolyn Dorfman’s first collaboration
with vocalist/composer, Jennifer Giering, who has created a haunting,
yet affirming, original score.
Performed by five women, PORTRAIT moves with poised grace
and elegant strength. Five woman dance the inner life of one woman. With
its haunting, yet affirming score, performed live by Ms. Giering, the
journey of creating this work revealed for Ms. Dorfman an astounding reality:
“Balance in life is not a static repose or rest, but rather a shifting
equilibrium within acceptable parameters.” Such is the life of a
woman. As in all of my work, the relationship of the individual to the
ensemble is of paramount importance. No where is it more critical than
when five dancers must come together to dance one life.
